Guwahati: The Assam State Drivers Association and the All Guwahati Cab Drivers Association have scheduled a protest for June 10. Drivers plan to gather outside the Transport Commissioner office to demand urgent revisions to current fare structures and improvements to their working conditions.
The unions launched this demonstration following multiple failed attempts to secure government intervention. Despite submitting several memorandums to the Transport Department and local district authorities, drivers claim they have received no effective response or assistance regarding their mounting financial struggles.
A primary driver for the protest is the widening gap between rising operational expenses and diminishing income. While fuel costs continue to climb, earnings in the online cab sector have plummeted. According to association data, per-kilometer rates have dropped from roughly Rs 25 in previous years to approximately Rs 8 during the 2025 to 2026 period.
Participants argue that this shift has made it nearly impossible to sustain their livelihoods. Hundreds of drivers from across the state are expected to attend the demonstration to call for policy changes that ensure fairer pay and long-term financial stability for the industry.
