Guwahati: Assam BJP officials lashed out at Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday, September 13. They labeled his recent critique of the state's flood crisis and price hikes as ridiculous. Party spokesperson Brojen Mahanta led the attack from the Guwahati headquarters. He dismissed Baghel's governance advice as hollow. Mahanta pointed to the Congress defeat in the 2023 Chhattisgarh elections as proof of Baghel's failures.
Mahanta listed a series of scandals tied to the former Chhattisgarh administration. These include a Rs 3,000 crore liquor scam and a parallel excise syndicate running from 2019 to 2022. He also cited the Mahadev betting app case and a Rs 500 crore coal levy racket. Other accusations touched on protection money schemes and irregularities in the 2021 Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission recruitment process. Spokesperson Pranjal Kalita and media panellist Amal Narayan Patowary joined him at the press conference.
Baghel had claimed that citizens are turning against the BJP for its anti-democratic behavior. Mahanta fired back by citing the 1975 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. He reminded the public that Assam leaders like Golap Borbora and Dulal Baruah were jailed during that period. The BJP further accused the Congress of protecting illegal migrants from Bangladesh to secure votes. "The conscious people of Assam have not forgotten how the Congress, for the sake of its vote-bank politics, sought to provide political protection and privileges to those who had illegally entered Assam from Bangladesh," Mahanta said.
