Guwahati: The Assam cabinet has officially designated Dibrugarh as a State Capital Region, marking a significant step in the administration's plan to expand the city's role. This decision, reached during the first cabinet meeting following the recent expansion of the Himanta Biswa Sarma ministry, aims to facilitate long-term urban growth.
To manage this transition, the government is establishing the State Capital Region Development Authority, Dibrugarh (SCRDA-D). This body will handle regional planning, identify new growth corridors, and coordinate future urban expansion projects. The local MLA will lead the authority as its ex-officio chairman, a role that carries Cabinet rank.
The region will encompass all areas within a 20-kilometre radius of the Dibrugarh Capital Complex. To bolster these efforts, the state has allocated 500 crore rupees to be spent over the next five years. Officials state that the move is aimed at "facilitating planned urban growth and strengthening infrastructure as Dibrugarh assumes a larger administrative role in the state." This funding is earmarked for new projects that supplement existing development work already underway in the area.
