Assam and Meghalaya Delay Border Talks Pending Cabinet Expansion

Shillong: Border negotiations between Meghalaya and Assam regarding six disputed areas will pause until the Assam government completes its cabinet expansion. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requested the delay to ensure that the ministers assigned to regional committees are in place before formal discussions resume.

This decision follows a high-level meeting held to address recent tensions in the Lapangap region. Officials from both states, including district council representatives, reached a clear agreement to protect the livelihoods of local villagers. Authorities confirmed that farming and other agricultural work will continue without disruption while the broader boundary dispute remains under review.

The agreement aims to maintain a stable and peaceful atmosphere for residents living along the border. Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Sarma have reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating physical boundary demarcation. Both state administrations are working toward a permanent settlement for the remaining disputed sectors, guided by the principles of the Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat initiative.
