Guwahati: The Asam Sahitya Sabha is moving to pick its next leaders. The state literary body formed a three-member sub-committee to oversee elections for vice-president and general secretary. These roles cover the 2027 to 2029 term.
Retired District and Sessions Judge Dr. Thaneshwar Kalita leads the group as Chief Election Officer. Kalita, a law professor at Royal Global University, works alongside educationist Paresh Baishya and notary Dr. Ratul Saikia. The Sabha announced the appointments in a September 30 press release signed by its president.
The organization set up this team using Article 14 of its constitution and the 2018 Election Rules. The Sabha gave the panel a clear mandate to run the process independently. The group has authority to enforce rules for free and fair voting within the current constitutional framework. As the Sabha noted, "The committee has also been authorised to take necessary steps to ensure free and fair polls, provided such measures remain within the constitutional framework of the organisation."
The two-year terms for these executive posts determine the leadership for the upcoming cycle. The sub-committee has yet to release a schedule. They will finalize voting dates and send out a formal notification soon.
