Kohima: The Ao Students Conference (AKM) has formally requested the department of economics and statistics to provide clarity regarding the digitisation of birth certificates. The organisation raised concerns over the continued issuance of hard copies and the lack of uniformity in the process across various towns and villages.
AKM vice president Bendangnangba and general secretary Aomayang Longkumer sent a letter to the district economics and statistics officer in Mokokchung. The student body noted that they received reports of villagers being charged varying fees for these documents, with costs ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 600. According to the student leaders, the organisation is worried that many rural areas are unaware of or confused by the government order and the new digital procedures.
The group is now urging the department to release a detailed explanation regarding the official fee structure and the specific steps required under the new system. The organisation requested that if the practice of issuing hard-copy certificates by village authorities is being phased out, this change must be clearly communicated to both the public and local officials. They stated, "Such clarification would help ensure uniformity in implementation, prevent confusion and create greater public awareness regarding the proper procedure for obtaining birth certificates."
