Angami Students Union Condemns Sexual Assault Involving Church Youth Leader

Kohima: The Angami Students Union (ASU) has issued a strong condemnation following the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl. Authorities have arrested a 34-year-old man, identified as a church youth leader from Kohima village, in connection with the crime.

ASU president Diezevísie Nakhro and general secretary Rajuselie Chücha issued a joint statement regarding the incident. They described the act as “a grave violation of human rights and a devastating assault” on the innocence of a minor that cannot be tolerated within society.

The union expressed deep concern regarding the perpetrator's role as a youth leader. They noted that places of worship should function as spaces of safety and trust, and that such crimes undermine public confidence in institutions expected to provide moral leadership. The ASU emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward exploitation and stressed the necessity of protecting young people from abuse.

While acknowledging that law enforcement has taken the suspect into custody, the union urged police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. They called on relevant authorities to strengthen preventative measures against crimes targeting women and children while ensuring that offenders face accountability. The union concluded by affirming its solidarity with the victim and her family as they pursue justice.
