Guwahati: AJP president Lurin Jyoti Gogoi wants permanent government action against unscientific coal mining and reckless sand extraction in Upper Assam. These practices ruin hills and block rivers. They make annual floods worse. Gogoi addressed a crowd on Sunday at the MC Club in Nazira during a meeting held by the Conscious Citizens Society.
He blasted the government for failing to implement lasting safeguards. Officials offer band-aid relief instead of fixing the root causes. "Allowing the destruction of nature and then distributing relief after floods is not a solution," Gogoi told the crowd. He demands scientifically sound policies to stop the ongoing pillage of natural resources.
The region faces constant threats from open coal mining and stone quarrying. Participants at the meeting agreed that the status quo is unsustainable. Public pressure must force authorities to step up and defend the local forests and rivers. Protecting these assets is the only way to shield future generations from recurring environmental disasters.
