Guwahati: AIIMS Guwahati kicked off its cardiac surgery program with a pair of successful open-heart procedures. The medical team hit this milestone on September 8. Surgeons operated on a seven-year-old child and a 47-year-old woman, both hailing from Assam. Each patient suffered from congenital heart defects characterized by a hole in the heart.
Professor Colonel Dr. Ashok Puranik, the Executive Director of AIIMS-Guwahati, led the initiative. The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, directed by Professor Vineet Mahajan, handled the technical heavy lifting. The crew used a heart-lung machine to manage bypass functions while the patients' hearts were still. The facility aims to bolster regional healthcare. Providing local access helps patients avoid long trips to distant hospitals for complex care.
The institute expects to grow these operations soon. Plans include adding coronary artery bypass surgery and other advanced interventions to the roster. According to an official release, the commencement of this program marks a major milestone for the institution. The move strengthens local cardiac care infrastructure for residents of the Northeast and neighboring states.
