Activist Demands Restoration of Autonomy to Garo Hills Council Branding

Shillong: Social activist Greneth Sangma is slamming the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council for scrubbing the word Autonomous from its official logos and receipts. He joins Tura MDC Bernard N Marak in calling out the move as a dangerous threat to tribal governance. It is not just a clerical error. The change strikes at the heart of the Sixth Schedule protections that shield local tribal communities.

Sangma says the council is playing a high-stakes game with its own constitutional identity. "Removing the word ‘Autonomous’ strips the body of its foundational identity. Without its autonomous status, the council is weakened, leaving tribal rights vulnerable. This appears to be a systemic attempt to undermine the council’s independence and make it subservient to state control," Sangma said.

The activist wants the Executive Committee to fix the branding immediately. He also wants an emergency General Body Meeting to drag the issue into the light. The goal is to stop the erosion of power before the council loses its grip on local oversight entirely.
