Kohima: The Zunheboto Range Students’ Union (ZRSU) publicly destroyed a large quantity of illicit tobacco products on June 12 at the Lizu Naghuto dumpsite. The union moved to incinerate the seized goods following a public notice issued on June 11, reinforcing its commitment to keeping illegal items out of the local market.

According to ZRSU president Kitolu S. Kibami and general secretary Tonoka V. Zhimomi, the cache included 19 packages smuggled by Sujit Kumar and Samuel, alongside four boxes linked to Ms. General Shop proprietor Ajmat Karim. These products had been hidden among standard grocery shipments. The destruction process took place in the presence of representatives from the GB’s Association and the Sumi Totimi Loka.

The union maintains a strict policy against the reentry of contraband into local trade. ZRSU leadership emphasized that enforcement is an investment in a healthier, nicotine free future, stating that it is necessary for “reducing preventable diseases and ensuring cleaner air.” The group also urged the District Administration to apply existing tobacco laws more rigorously to address the growing accessibility of these harmful substances.

This initiative follows a series of seizures conducted on June 9 in New Colony and Project Colony. These enforcement actions align with a government notification from June 2, 2026, which bans the storage, sale, and transportation of tobacco products. Beyond health concerns, the union highlighted the economic damage caused by the illegal tobacco trade, specifically citing tax evasion and the funding of criminal networks.
