Wokha District Issues Pig Import and Slaughter Ban Following African Swine Fever Outbreak

Kohima: Wokha Deputy Commissioner K Mhathung Tsanglao has declared emergency zones and implemented strict regulations following confirmed cases of African Swine Fever in the district. Acting under the Prevention and Control of Infection and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009, the administration established an infected zone within a one-kilometre radius of affected sites, including Lower Mt Tiyi College Area, Wokha Block, Wokha Village, and Wokha Town.

A surveillance zone now spans ten kilometres from these points to prevent further spread. The district has enacted a total ban on the slaughter, import, export, and transport of pigs and pork products within these designated areas. Officials emphasized the urgency of these measures due to the disease's high transmission rate and its threat to the local agricultural economy.

The administration issued standard operating procedures requiring residents to report any unusual pig illnesses or deaths immediately. Farmers must follow specific guidelines for the disposal of carcasses and maintain rigorous disinfection and bio-security protocols. Citing the danger to the industry, the notice stated the administration is taking action because of the "highly contagious nature of ASF and its severe impact on the pig population and farmers’ livelihoods." These directives will remain in effect until the district office issues further orders.
