Wokha District Imposes Restrictions Following African Swine Fever Outbreak

Kohima: The district administration in Wokha has issued strict containment measures following the discovery of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the area. Deputy Commissioner K. Mhathung Tsanglao signed the order under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, after receiving confirmation from the chief veterinary officer.

Officials have established an infected zone covering a one-kilometer radius around Wokha Town, Wokha Village, and the Lower Mt. Tiyi College area. A broader surveillance zone extends 10 kilometers beyond these borders. To prevent further transmission of the disease, the administration has banned the slaughter, import, and export of pigs and pork products within these designated zones.

The DC emphasized the need for strict compliance with safety guidelines until further notice. Residents and farmers must follow biosecurity protocols and report any signs of unusual illness or deaths in pig populations immediately. The order states that the move is necessary because of "the highly contagious nature of ASF and its potential impact on the pig population and the livelihoods of farmers."
