Kohima: Deputy Commissioner K. Mhathung Tsanglao has declared infected and surveillance zones in Wokha district to manage an outbreak of African Swine Fever. The decision follows official reports from the Chief Veterinary Officer and the Animal Husbandry office regarding the presence of the virus in the region.
The infected zones cover a one kilometre radius around Lower Mt. Tiyi College, Wokha Block, Wokha Village, and Wokha Town. A secondary surveillance zone extends to a 10 kilometre radius outside of these immediate areas. The Deputy Commissioner invoked the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, to enforce these restrictions.
Officials emphasize that the virus is highly contagious and threatens both local pig populations and the livelihoods of farmers. Consequently, the district has banned the slaughter, import, and export of pigs and pork products. The order prohibits the transport of any pig-related goods from the designated zones.
Residents must follow strict biosecurity and disinfection protocols. The order requires the immediate reporting of any unusual sickness or pig mortality. Regarding the disposal of animals, authorities stated that farmers must ensure "proper disposal of carcasses as per guidelines." These containment measures remain in effect until further notice.
