Guwahati: A 65-year-old woman died after a wild elephant attacked her in Thengapara village, Assam. The incident occurred on October 3 at 5 am. Alani Rabha was the victim. The village sits in the Rani Forest Range of the East Kamrup Forest Division.
The animal terrorized the area for two days. It moved through Garopara and surrounding areas starting Wednesday night. The elephant raided the granary of Paresh Rabha at 3 am, destroying the structure to steal a sack of paddy. It later smashed a house owned by Prabin Rabha in Challi before arriving at Thengapara.
Alani's husband, 75-year-old Madan Rabha, watched the horror unfold. He hid behind his house while Alani ran for cover at neighbor Samudra Rabha’s property. The elephant tracked her down. She fell while trying to flee. The beast struck her with its trunk and dragged her across the courtyard. Neighbors shouted to scare the animal away, but the damage was done.
Family members rushed her to the Rani Community Health Centre. Doctors referred her to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. She died while in transit. Anger is boiling over in the village. Residents claim the forest department and local officials ignore their pleas for protection.
"People are living in constant fear whenever elephants enter the village. We have repeatedly informed the authorities about elephant movement, but the problem continues. Now an elderly woman has lost her life," one local said. Villagers now demand stronger intervention to stop the animals before they reach homes. They want the government to map routes and secure vulnerable settlements.
