Guwahati: AASU-backed candidates claimed major victories in the 2026-27 Gauhati University Postgraduate Students' Union elections. The count finished late Friday. Arunav Duwarah took the president's chair with 1,471 votes. Abantika Mahanta secured literary secretary with 1,729 votes, and Jyotirmoy Das won boys' common room secretary with 2,181 votes.
Anushka Medhi grabbed the girls' common room secretary spot with 1,931 votes. Neel Kamal Baruah pulled in 2,220 votes to win cultural secretary, the highest tally reported. Rajib Boro took sports secretary and Dubari Saikia won music secretary, both running unopposed.
The ABVP bagged three seats. Krishtina Lahon won assistant secretary for postgraduates with 1,745 votes, and Bhisanka Jyoti Dutta took the undergraduate assistant secretary spot with 2,077 votes. Krishti Saikia rounded out their wins as fine arts secretary with 1,590 votes.
The ACP, acting as the student wing for the AGP, also landed three positions. Amartya Duarah won vice-president with 1,799 votes. Rainbow Narzary took gymnasium secretary with 2,192 votes, and Suman Sahil Pegu won major games secretary with 1,839 votes.
Chaos erupted over two specific positions. University officials cancelled the nominations for the general secretary and social service secretary posts. This triggered protests across the campus. Reflecting on the broader impact of these campus dynamics, one source noted: "The PGSU election is held to elect representatives to the students' union at Gauhati University, with candidates supported by different student organisations contesting several office-bearer posts."
