Guwahati: A four-month-old wild elephant calf died in the Roumari area of Assam’s Kamrup district. Locals found the body on Sunday and notified the Forest Department. The area falls under the Singra Forest Range, where a herd has been foraging for food for several days.
Forest officials faced a dangerous scene. The mother elephant stayed nearby and turned aggressive after the death of her calf. Teams led by Singra Forest Range Officer Kamal Deka, Singra Beat Officer Nishant Kumar Das, and Hahim Beat Forest Officer Swahnewaz Hussain arrived to secure the site.
The recovery took several hours. Personnel used a drone to pinpoint the carcass before moving in to retrieve it. Members of the West Kamrup Forest Division and Boko Police assisted in the operation. The team moved the body to the Singra Forest Range Office.
Officials confirmed the animal was roughly four months old. Hahim Beat Forest Officer Swahnewaz Hussain said, "A post-mortem and forensic examination would be conducted to establish the cause of death." Authorities expect the results to clarify why the calf died.
