United Democratic Party mourns death of founder HAD Sawian

Shillong: The United Democratic Party is mourning the loss of its founding member and first general secretary, Hobell Arthur David Sawian. He passed away on June 8 at the age of 89 and was laid to rest at the Lumshyiap Presbyterian Church cemetery on Wednesday.

UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh expressed deep sadness over the death of the veteran leader, who helped build the organization since its formation in 1997. Lyngdoh credited Sawian with shaping the party structure and mentoring generations of workers during his long tenure. “He was a man of principle and selfless service who helped build this party and inspired countless workers to dedicate themselves to the cause of our people,” Lyngdoh said.

Before his involvement in politics, Sawian enjoyed a distinguished career as an IAS officer. A member of the 1961 batch, he held numerous significant administrative roles before concluding his service as the secretary of the North Eastern Council in 1996. The party noted that his extensive contributions to regionalism and public administration will serve as a lasting legacy for Meghalaya.
