Shillong: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse visited Meghalaya on May 29 to evaluate local sports and youth development programs. During the review, she met with Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and Sports Department Secretary Vijay Kumar D to discuss strategies for improving regional infrastructure and talent development.

A primary focus of the meeting was the Chief Minister's Football Mission. Officials reported that the program currently supports approximately 10,000 players through 125 grassroots centers across the state. This initiative has become a key driver for nurturing football talent in the region. Additionally, the state government provides financial assistance to 900 athletes through its dedicated Sports Scholarship Scheme.

The discussion also addressed major infrastructure plans, specifically the proposed Mawkhanu Football Stadium. This project is expected to be one of the largest venues in Northeast India and is being considered as a potential site for the National Games opening ceremony. Khadse emphasized that the government is committed to aligning state facilities with Khelo India-accredited academies to provide better pathways for emerging athletes.

Beyond sports, the officials reviewed the Youth Engagement and Empowerment Scheme for Students, which provides support to organizations focused on youth activities. Khadse reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to collaborating with Meghalaya to strengthen sports ecosystems and expand opportunities for young people throughout the Northeast.
