Aizawl: Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, met with state officials in Mizoram on Saturday to address critical updates in the local power sector and urban infrastructure. The review session took place at the MINECO Conference Hall and included Mizoram’s Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, K. Sapdanga, and Minister for Power and Electricity, F. Rodingliana.
Khattar urged the state to accelerate the rollout of smart meters, specifically targeting government buildings and major commercial hubs. While officials reported that 52,886 smart meters have been installed so far, this represents only 18.01 percent of the total goal of 292,081 units. To boost revenue, the minister recommended a security deposit system for prepaid metering, noting that the state has already begun transitioning departmental offices to this model.
Discussions also covered the future of the state's power grid. The minister encouraged a shift toward solar energy and committed to reviewing proposals for new hydroelectric projects on the Tlawng, Tuivai, and Chhimtuipui rivers. Ongoing grid improvements remain a priority under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
Regarding urban development, the minister praised Mizoram for reaching ODF+ status under the Swachh Bharat Mission. He pledged continued central support for waste management, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives, building on the progress made over the last decade of the mission.
