Shillong: Sub-divisional authorities are changing traffic patterns on the Laitlyngkot to Lyngkyrdem stretch starting July 22. This 13-kilometer section, running from Kms 24.00 to 37.00, sits on the vital highway connecting Shillong to the Dawki international border. Major construction work continues here.
Drivers must take the diversion through Laitlyngkot, Iew Mawiong, Umthli, Nongthymmai, and the Laitkynsew NH point. Only light motor vehicles can use this path during daylight hours. Night closures run from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM for all traffic.
Officials banned medium and heavy commercial vehicles from the diversion route. They might grant exceptions for essential goods if operators get prior administrative approval. Emergency responders face a strict vetting process. "Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, fire services, and police, will be permitted during closure periods subject to on-site safety assessments."
The monsoon season sparked these moves. Heavy rains keep the ground soft. Landslides and rock falls threaten the project area. Commuters should skip non-essential trips when rain falls hard or after dark.
