Shillong: Construction crews missed the August 7, 2026, deadline for the Shillong-Dawki road widening project. This international corridor now faces a revised completion target of December 31, 2026. The road work crawls forward. Officials report only 51 per cent physical progress and 46 per cent financial progress on the site.
The project covers 26.55 km of roadway. It spans from Design Km 10.670 to Km 37.550, reaching all the way to the border of Bangladesh. This work falls under the JICA-funded Package-II contract. Authorities awarded the deal in 2023 for roughly Rs 525 crore, and labor crews began clearing ground in 2024. A toll plaza will stand at Ch. Km 22.850 once the construction finishes.
This route acts as a vital link for trade and movement between Meghalaya and Bangladesh. Stakeholders remain concerned about the slow execution of this international connectivity project. Commuters must wait months longer. The project team insists the delay is manageable, noting that "the project now likely to be completed only by December 31, 2026."
