Gangtok: Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta, conducted a thorough review of infrastructure and development projects during his visit to Sikkim. Traveling along NH-10 and NH-510, the Minister inspected public facilities in Gyalshing District, including the Ayush Hospital and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, while evaluating the progress of national initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
A significant portion of the visit focused on highway expansion. Key projects include the Rhenock-Rongli Road, estimated at ₹595 crore, and extensive improvements to NH-10. Plans for bypasses at Rangpo-Rorathang and Melli-Singtam are designed to improve traffic safety and reduce congestion. The Minister specifically reviewed the status of the Gangtok Bypass, ordering its completion by November 2026.
Data from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited shows that 58 km of road projects are already complete, with an additional 147 km currently underway. Simultaneously, the Border Roads Organisation continues work on the strategic NH-310 route, which is essential for regional border connectivity. Tamta requested the addition of lay byes for tourist vehicles and prioritized the implementation of landslide mitigation efforts.
Reaffirming the government's focus on the region, Tamta noted the broader impact of these improvements. He stated, "Strengthening road infrastructure in Sikkim is crucial for economic growth, trade, accessibility to remote areas, and unlocking the State's tourism potential."
