Sikkim Plans Major Push for Local Filmmakers

Gangtok: Sikkim is upgrading its film sector. The Sikkim Film Promotion Board met Thursday to map out plans for better equipment, training, and a new industry conclave. Chairman Tashi Tshering Bhutia led the talks.

A three-day Sikkim Cine Conclave will run from November 26 to 28. It highlights the theme In Sikkim, By Sikkim. The event features short-film competitions, screenings, and an awards program. Top films could earn slots at the Sikkim International Film Festival.

Board member Prashant Rasaily flagged a lack of professional gear. He wants filmmakers to access lenses and cameras without depending solely on cash handouts. He suggested a partnership with the Skill Development Department. Rasaily said, "any equipment made available would require proper maintenance and technical support."

Recognition matters too. Dr. Manoj Rai proposed set criteria to honor artists, entrepreneurs, and debut filmmakers. Rushma Rai wants the conclave to mix contemporary Sikkimese movies with classics and outside productions. Officials also eyed a deal with Tezaract, a company based in Andhra Pradesh. This could bring training in artificial intelligence and digital media to local creators. The board is still vetting the framework before final approval.
