Shillong: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has officially named senior lawyer Vivan G.K. Kynta as its candidate for the upcoming Shillong parliamentary by-election. Party president Metbah Lyngdoh announced the decision at a gathering in the party office, attended by various leaders, legislators, and supporters.
Lyngdoh stated that the campaign will prioritize indigenous rights, effective governance, and the overall development of Meghalaya. The party expects a stronger showing in this contest, citing recent electoral successes in the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council elections as evidence of growing public support. Lyngdoh highlighted Kynta’s nearly 30 years of experience as a standing counsel for the district council as a major asset for his candidacy.
Kynta expressed his appreciation for the party's trust and pledged to advocate for the state’s key interests if elected. His entry completes a competitive field, as he joins candidates from the Voice of the People Party, the National People’s Party, and the Congress for the upcoming vote.
Despite the announcement, the event was marked by the absence of several senior UDP figures. Notably, former cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh and legislator Kyrmen Shylla were missing, fueling rumors of internal friction following recent cabinet reshuffles. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui was also absent, though reports indicate he is currently out of the country.
