UDP Chief Calls for United Front to Champion Indigenous Interests in Meghalaya

Shillong: United Democratic Party president Metbah Lyngdoh has issued a fresh call for regional political parties in Meghalaya to join forces. He believes that a unified approach is vital to effectively champion the aspirations and needs of the state's indigenous population.

Lyngdoh acknowledged that attempts to consolidate regional political power are not new. He noted that leaders and organizations have explored various unification strategies for decades, including past efforts involving the Hill State People’s Democratic Party and the All Party Hill Leaders’ Conference. While these previous initiatives have struggled to achieve long-term success, the party remains committed to the goal.

The UDP leader emphasized that the spirit of regionalism continues to drive their agenda. He urged all local political groups to adopt a common platform, arguing that a collective front provides a stronger voice for indigenous communities. He also clarified that focusing on indigenous rights does not involve marginalizing others, as the party remains dedicated to protecting local interests while fostering respect for every community residing in the state.
