Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have taken two men into custody following the deaths of two minor girls whose bodies were pulled from a pond in Kokrajhar district on May 21. The victims, who lived in Lalkura Part-II village, had reportedly left for Dholmara Higher Secondary School that morning but failed to return home.

The search for the girls began after family members and neighbors discovered their bicycles, school bags, and sandals left near the edge of a roadside pond. Upon receiving reports of the incident, police arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies. A team of officials, including the local Executive Magistrate and a Circle Officer, conducted an initial inquest before sending the remains to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Police have filed an FIR against 66-year-old Golam Mostafa and 42-year-old Ejhan Ali, both of whom reside in Deodoba village. The two men face charges of negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. They were arrested and remanded to judicial custody by a local court the day after the discovery. While a preliminary post-mortem report is in hand, officials confirmed that the investigation remains active as they work to finalize the case.
