Shillong: Tura paid tribute to the late Bishop George Mamalassery. Minister Marcuise N. Marak officially renamed the road running from Walbakgre Junction to Holy Cross Hospital in his honor. The announcement came during a memorial service held at St. Luke Church in Walbakgre, marking the second anniversary of the bishop's passing.
The event drew a large crowd. Government officials, clergy, and local residents gathered to recognize a man who shaped the region. Bishop Andrew R. Marak unveiled a memorial stone dedicated to the late leader, citing his lifelong commitment to education, health, and social welfare in the Garo Hills.
Marak highlighted the bishop’s long legacy of service. He spent 28 years leading the Tura Diocese, acting as a catalyst for development across the region. Under his guidance, the diocese established key institutions including nursing schools and the Monfort Centre for Education for those with disabilities.
Reflecting on his career, the minister noted, “Bishop George Mamalassery, 1970 bilsio Dalu-ni Parish Priest-na songangna skang Tura, Dalu aro Baghmara-o Assistant Parish Priest dake uni priest ministry-o kam ka·na a·bachengaha aro bilsi 10-na dangdike on·angaha.”
His influence reached beyond the church. He founded the Diocesan Social Service Centre, known as BAKDIL, to improve local living conditions. The bishop was appointed the first leader of the Tura Diocese in 1979, serving until his retirement. The new road name serves as a permanent mark of his work for the public good.
