Shillong: Thma U Rangli-Juki denounced the arson and vandalism that marred a Khasi Students' Union motorcycle rally in Shillong on August 19. The group labeled the attacks on buses, tourist taxis, pedestrians, and various vehicles as unacceptable. It hurts working families. Daily wage earners, taxi drivers, and street vendors suffer when peace breaks down.
No protest justifies spreading fear among locals or visitors, according to the organization. While TUR demands accountability for those responsible, it rejects the state government’s current response. Officials are using the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act and the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act to manage unrest.
TUR blasted the government for the “weaponisation” of these laws. They claim the acts bypass constitutional due process and invite political misuse. The group warned that avoiding political dialogue in favor of detention will only fuel public distrust and instability. They want the government to revoke the MPDA and use transparent legal channels to prosecute offenders. Instead of state force, TUR called for civil society to reject hatred and prioritize human rights to restore order.
