Shillong: Engines echoed through the Shillong hills on Thursday as hundreds of Congress workers and supporters took to the streets. The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee organized the Save Democracy motorcycle rally to spotlight constitutional rights. The event stretched from Upper Shillong all the way into the Ri Bhoi district.
Participants voiced anger over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. They specifically pointed to what the party labels as vote chori. The riders started at the Eastern Air Command. They cruised through Umsyrphi, Mawlai Pump, Mawlai ISBT, and Lad Umroi before reaching their final stop at Bhoirymbong.
The event remained peaceful. It marks just one piece of a broader campaign meant to wake the public up regarding current political conditions. The party claims these issues have stirred national controversy. According to the Congress, the ride is part of a larger plan to raise awareness on issues that they believe affect "democratic values and constitutional rights in India."
