Agartala: The Tipraland Statehood Demand Committee, a group of tribal thinkers, blasted regional parties on Thursday for cooling on the push for a separate state. The committee insists that areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council need their own statehood to protect indigenous identity.
Aghor Debbarma, a leader for the committee, said political players grew quiet once they got a taste of power. He argued that these groups used statehood to win elections but have since ignored their promises. "We have been demanding separate statehood for the TTAADC areas. This is a constitutional demand under Articles 1 and 2 of the Constitution. Parties that once projected statehood as their primary political objective appear to have distanced themselves from the issue after coming to power," Debbarma said.
He singled out the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura and the Tipra Motha. The former joined the BJP as an ally, while the latter rose to power on the promise of Greater Tipraland. Debbarma claims neither party is doing enough to follow through. He warned that politicians must stop offering empty words to the voters. "No promise should be reduced to mere lip service. People should assess the situation and draw their own conclusions," he added.
The group also cited concerns about illegal migration from Bangladesh and its threat to the local demographic makeup. Neither the IPFT nor the Tipra Motha provided an immediate response to these accusations.
