Agartala: Chief Minister Manik Saha ordered officials to draft a long-term plan for the state's water supply. He wants to move past temporary fixes. The project focuses on the Gomati River to feed Agartala and surrounding areas. The state relies heavily on groundwater right now. Rapid growth and dry seasons make the current system unstable.
The plan involves drawing water from the Maharani Barrage near Udaipur. Crews will build pipelines, treatment plants, and massive reservoirs. Officials aim to stop water waste and boost rainwater harvesting. They will store monsoon runoff to survive the dry months. The project intends to secure water for decades to come.
Saha pushed the departments to work in mission mode. He argued that foresight prevents future crises. Speaking at a review meeting in Agartala, he noted, "With determination and sustained effort, even seemingly impossible goals can be achieved. Long-term vision often lays the foundation for significant success."
Key state leaders, including Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and Mayor Dipak Majumder, joined the meeting at the TIFT War Room. They discussed building dedicated raw water reservoirs to keep the taps running during lean seasons. The government expects this shift to solve the capital's chronic water shortages once and for all.
