Agartala: Tripura farmers are making more money. Chief Minister Manik Saha says average monthly earnings jumped from Rs 6,580 in 2015 to Rs 13,590 today. He credits this boost to a string of new state-led welfare programs.
Saha spoke at a gathering in Bamutia on June 26. He touted the state’s agricultural output, which hits 12 lakh tonnes of rice and 364 tonnes of wheat each year. "A farmer's income in Tripura has doubled from Rs 6,580 in 2015-16 to Rs 13,590 at present due to several measures taken by our government," he said.
The state now buys paddy straight from growers at a minimum support price of Rs 23.69 per kg. This cut out the middlemen. Since 2018, the government has moved over 2.6 lakh tonnes of paddy and paid out Rs 529.81 crore. Central aid also flows into local pockets. Over two lakh farmers just grabbed an instalment of cash from the PM-KISAN scheme.
Registration remains slow. Only 64,074 farmers have grabbed their unique identity cards so far. Saha wants everyone signed up with the Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department to secure their benefits. He ordered officials to fan out and get the word to the fields.
