Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha slammed the 1975 Emergency as a dark stain on Indian democracy. He spoke at a BJP event marking Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas on June 25. The CM claims the Congress government abused power to save its own political skin. He argued that the party weakened core democratic institutions to stay in control.

Saha lived through the era. He recalled a climate of total fear and deep uncertainty. People lived in constant terror of sudden arrest. "Only those who lived through that period can truly understand what the Emergency was. There was widespread panic, and nobody knew when they could be arrested or sent to jail," Saha said.

The Constitution allows for emergency powers during war or armed rebellion under Article 352. Saha accused the past government of twisting these rules for personal gain. Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared this date as Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas earlier in 2024. The move aims to keep the memory of those events alive for younger voters.

Saha wants the public to keep the pressure on to stop authoritarian rule from ever returning. He urged party workers to spread the word about the past. "It is important that this day is observed every year and that people remain aware of this dark chapter in the nation's history so that democracy remains alive and strong," he said. The CM insists that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government prioritizes protecting these values since taking office in 2014.
