Agartala: Tripura’s government is ending private practice for doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital. The state Cabinet pushed the measure to keep medical staff focused on public patients. The ban takes hold once the official gazette notification hits the streets.

Cabinet spokesperson Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed the shift. Doctors must choose between their state salary or private work. "Resignation remains a personal choice but dual engagement will not be permitted," Chowdhury said. No staff member, regardless of rank, gets a pass on this new rule.

The state is footing the bill to keep staff on board. Doctors will pocket a Non-Practicing Allowance worth 20 percent of their basic pay to make up for lost outside income. This move mimics policies already active at institutions like AIIMS.

State leaders studied similar setups before greenlighting the plan. Chief Minister Manik Saha led the charge after months of internal review. Officials plan to monitor this pilot program before deciding if other state hospitals follow suit.
