Agartala: The Tripura Cabinet ordered a total ban on private practice for doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital. Chief Minister Manik Saha led the meeting that finalized the move. Around 350 doctors now face a choice. Quit their private chambers or resign from the state payroll.

The government will hand out a 20 percent salary boost to compensate for the lost income. Cabinet spokesperson Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed the pay hike. He noted that the policy aims to sharpen medical standards at the state's top referral centers. "The decision has been taken to maintain the quality of healthcare services and ensure better treatment facilities for patients," Chowdhury said.

District and sub-divisional hospitals remain exempt for now. Officials may expand the rule later. The policy follows advice from an All India Institute of Medical Sciences team. They pushed for the change to mirror standards at top national hospitals. The government expects to launch the program shortly to keep specialists on-site and ready for patients.
