Agartala: Tripura officials officially blocked doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and Gobind Ballabh Pant Hospital from working private jobs. Health Secretary Kiran Gitte confirmed the move on June 25. The decision followed high-level talks with medical associations.
Chief Minister Manik Saha met with the All Tripura Government Doctors Association and the AGMC Teachers Forum on June 21 to finalize the plan. Officials claim the restriction will sharpen medical education and patient care. The move brings Tripura in line with states like Haryana and Maharashtra.
Dr. M. Srinivas, the director of AIIMS New Delhi, visited the facilities in 2025. He pushed for the change to turn the site into a top-tier center. "The report submitted by Dr. Srinivas recommended a complete ban on private practice by doctors working at AGMC and GBP Hospital to improve both medical education and healthcare services," Gitte said.
Doctors agreed to the ban under specific conditions. They requested timely promotions and better research funding. The state cabinet already approved a Non-Practising Allowance worth 20 percent of basic pay. Officials are now rewriting medical service rules to lock in these benefits. Gitte believes this shift clears the way for new super-specialty courses.
