Shillong: The Indian Ministry of Education has granted approval for three prestigious foreign universities to establish campuses in India. The University of Bristol and the University of York will launch operations in Mumbai, while the University of New South Wales (UNSW) will open a campus in Bengaluru.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated the move supports the internationalization vision outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He said the establishment of these campuses will further strengthen quality education, global learning partnerships, and research collaboration.
University of Bristol plans to focus on subjects like finance, data science, economics, and immersive arts at its Mumbai enterprise campus. The University of York will also base its first overseas campus in Mumbai, offering programs in artificial intelligence, cyber security, business, and creative industries. Meanwhile, UNSW Bengaluru is scheduled to open in August 2026 at the Manyata Business Park, specializing in business, computer science, and cyber security.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) oversaw the approval process, which follows a framework designed to streamline the operation of foreign institutions while protecting their autonomy. Officials expect the new campuses to foster academic mobility and deepen educational ties with the United Kingdom and Australia, while positioning India as a prominent global study destination.
