Taxi Driver Murder Sparks Vigilante Crackdown in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong: A brutal murder in East Jaintia Hills has sent shockwaves through the region. Kyrshan Lamurong, a 34-year-old father of six, vanished on June 15. Searchers found his body Friday inside an abandoned coal pit at Dongkon village. The site operates under a government ban, yet the killers used it to hide the crime.

Police arrested Tensing Dkhar, Kumar Barman, and Joysharon Barman for the abduction and slaying. Officers recovered the victim’s Maruti Suzuki S-Presso near Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills. East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Shailendra Bamaniya credited the breakthrough to technical surveillance and human intelligence.

The suspects confessed to the crime during questioning. Following the arrests, the Dorbar Shnong of Mulait Bri-Sumer distanced itself from the accused. Rangbah Shnong Defender Pakem said an internal probe showed Dkhar was not from their village. He noted that the clarification was vital: "the clarification was necessary to protect the village’s reputation."

The murder ignited a fiery reaction from the Jaintia National Council. The group started unauthorized verification drives targeting outsiders. Publicity secretary Mebanteilang Sukhlain said the operation intends to track non-tribal residents and their jobs. This move sidesteps official state and district authority. The investigation into the motive continues while the victim's family holds his funeral.
