Tangkhul Naga Long Rejects Kuki Civil Society Orders in Ukhrul and Kamjong

Imphal: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the apex body for the Tangkhul Nagas, has issued a strict directive for Kuki villages in the Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. The organization ordered residents to ignore instructions from Kuki civil society groups that require them to pay hill house taxes to Kangpokpi and install signs identifying their areas as part of Kangpokpi District.

TNL Vice President Eno RS Jollyson described the orders from the Working Committee of Kuki CSOs and the Kuki Students Organisation as illegal and provocative. The TNL stated that these actions represent an attempt to create unauthorized administrative structures within Tangkhul territory. They maintained that the land belongs exclusively to the indigenous Tangkhul Naga people and criticized the use of intimidation to enforce these directives.

The TNL reaffirmed its opposition to the creation of seven new districts in Manipur, which the United Naga Council has challenged since 2016. According to the TNL, the Nagas do not recognize Kangpokpi as a legitimate district, viewing it instead as part of Senapati. The leadership warned that complying with the Kuki organizations could worsen existing ethnic tensions in the region and insisted that no entity has the authority to alter traditional territorial jurisdictions.
