Shillong: Balwat Ronchanggre Government LP School in South Garo Hills has become a stark symbol of systemic neglect in Meghalaya. A viral social media video revealed classrooms missing doors, windows, and parts of the roof, allowing livestock to wander inside to seek shelter alongside students.
Established in 1935, the school serves 52 students with a staff of four teachers. Despite the high quality of instruction, the physical state of the school has reached a breaking point. Two of the three site buildings are in total ruin, forcing students and staff to cram into a single-room RCC structure built in the early 2000s. To manage the lack of space, teachers conduct seven classes simultaneously or borrow time at a nearby Upper Primary school, starting lessons at 7:00 AM.
Headmaster Greatherson R Sangma stated that the administration has repeatedly submitted complaints, photos, and videos to the District Education Office, but has received no response. Local civil society groups, including the GSU, FKJGP, and AYWO, recently inspected the site to highlight the lack of political action.
GSU Chokpot President Jish A Sangma criticized local legislator Sengchim Sangma and the education department for ignoring the school for two years. As the monsoon season approaches, community leaders are calling for immediate government intervention to repair the facilities and protect the safety of the students.
