Student Unions Protest Proposed Relocation of Doyang Polytechnic

Kohima: The All Nagaland College Students Union and the Lotha Middle Range Students Union are opposing plans to temporarily relocate the government polytechnic in Doyang. Both organizations argue that the state government should prioritize building protective infrastructure to combat landslide risks rather than moving the school, which they warn would disrupt academic progress and hinder the institution’s long-term development.

Landslide threats at the campus have been exacerbated by heavy rainfall and road construction under the PMGSY Phase-III project nearby. Student leaders are calling for the construction of retaining and breast walls to stabilize the site. They believe regular maintenance and monitoring offer a more sustainable and cost-effective solution than relocation.

As the only institution in Nagaland offering a three-year diploma in architecture assistantship, the polytechnic serves as a critical hub for technical and vocational training. The Lotha Middle Range Students Union noted that the facility remains the sole technical school in Wokha district and currently serves 24 students. Both unions have appealed to the Chief Minister and the director of technical education to reconsider the move, maintaining that relocation should be a final resort.
