SPARK Launches Outreach Campaign to Combat Child Labour in Meghalaya

Shillong: SPARK, an organization dedicated to community welfare, observed World Day Against Child Labour 2026 by hosting a week-long outreach initiative across Meghalaya. Under the theme Secure Futures, End Child Labour: Investing in Education and Livelihoods, the group focused on areas such as Iewduh Slum, Mawlynrei Trianshnong, and Mawlong Umsawli.

The campaign aimed to educate the public on the dangers of child labour, which strips children of their safety, dignity, and access to schooling. SPARK founder Shima Modak engaged with parents and local leaders to emphasize the necessity of positive parenting and collective action. Modak stated, "The primary goal was to sensitise the communities to the long-term damage caused by child labour, which deprives children of their education, dignity and safety."

Activities throughout the week included film screenings, poster displays, and signature drives. The organization also visited local businesses to warn owners about the legal and moral consequences of hiring children under 14. As a result of these efforts, several identified child labourers were successfully transitioned into SPARK Educational Centres to begin their formal schooling.
