South West Khasi Hills Issues Safety Advisory Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Shillong: The District Disaster Management Authority in South West Khasi Hills issued a formal advisory today as forecasts predict heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms, and a heightened risk of landslides. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols to prevent accidents during the adverse weather.

Authorities have explicitly told citizens to avoid rivers, streams, and waterfalls until conditions improve. Commuters traveling through the district should exercise extreme caution on hill roads and highways, particularly at night, due to the high likelihood of rockfalls and landslides.

The administration provided specific guidance for managing property and personal safety during storms. "During storms, the public is advised to stay indoors and secure loose objects like roofing sheets and farming equipment," the advisory stated. Residents should disconnect electronic appliances during intense lightning and avoid sheltering under tall trees or near power lines.

Farmers must refrain from working in open fields or on slopes during these conditions. If livestock deaths occur, owners are required to report the incidents to the Veterinary Department within 24 hours. The district encourages the public to monitor official updates from the India Meteorological Department and contact the 112 emergency helpline if they require disaster-related assistance.
