South West Garo Hills Launches Campaign to Re-enroll School Dropouts

Shillong: The South West Garo Hills district administration launched a re-enrollment campaign in Nayapara, Mahendraganj, to bring students who left school back into the education system. Authorities have identified 188 dropouts so far and are working to track additional students to facilitate their return to classrooms.

Deputy Commissioner Kumari Annendya Raajsree met with families during the event to advocate for the value of schooling. She told parents and students that completing an education is essential for making informed decisions and protecting individuals from becoming victims of fraud.

The initiative was conceptualized by Zikzak Block Development Officer Torali K Marak and Sub-Divisional School Education Officer Emphul Ch. Marak. The pair focused on the necessity of providing counseling to both parents and children to overcome barriers to attendance. Officials also used the session to address pressing social issues. Assistant Labour Commissioner Leni Bethlen K Sangma discussed the legal implications of child labor, while District Child Protection Officer Tanweera M Sangma educated the public on the risks and consequences of teenage pregnancy.

Following the sessions, eight students, including five girls and three boys, committed to returning to school. The education department has promised to provide full support to these students as they reintegrate into the mainstream system.
