Gangtok: Sikkim filmmaker Tribeny Rai debuted her feature film, Shape of Momo, during a grand premiere at Gangtok's Vajra Cinema Hall on Thursday. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended the event as the chief guest alongside Madam Krishna Kumari Rai, state officials, and distinguished guests from Sikkim and Nepal.
Rai, an alumnus of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, drew inspiration for the project from her own upbringing. The film examines the pressures of patriarchal expectations and how they influence the lives and legacies of women. Following the screening, the Chief Minister honored the cast and crew for their contributions to the arts.
The film follows a woman who returns to her hometown after quitting her job. Through a realistic lens, the story addresses themes of migration, belonging, and womanhood. The title acts as a metaphor for social expectations, which has resonated with audiences for its authentic and grounded performances.
Produced by Geeta Rai and Kislay under Dalle Khursani Productions, the film features executive producers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Payal Kapadia. Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media is handling distribution. Having already secured 15 international awards, the production is scheduled for a wide theatrical release across India and Nepal on May 29, 2026.
