Gangtok: Sikkim is positioning itself as a pilot state for a new Himalayan creative economy. Press Secretary Yougan Tamang outlined the plan on September 19. He wants to link youth talent with local tradition. The strategy relies on public-private partnerships to turn cultural assets into cash.
Tamang spoke at the fourth season of the Creative Economy Forum. The event is run by Cinedarbaar under the Union ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology, and Culture. He joined a panel titled "Orange is the New Currency: Creative Capital Uniting Nations" with Brazilian Ambassador Kenneth Felix Haczynski da Nobrega and Suriname Ambassador Hanisha Jairam.
The state aims to build sustainable livelihoods through art, music, crafts, and storytelling. This approach preserves heritage while fueling the digital market. Officials believe indigenous knowledge is a serious economic engine. Tamang noted, "Sikkim could serve as a pilot for a Himalayan creative economy model that combines sustainability, indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage and digital-age entrepreneurship."
The government is currently pushing a Creatorpreneur Policy. This scheme targets the state’s young population to drive growth and feed into India’s national economy. Tamang invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s term for the region, Ashtalakshmi, to argue that Northeast India is ready for greater mainstream engagement.
