Shillong: Shillong commuters are embracing the new Ka Bos Jong Ngi bus service. The government-run fleet is reviving organized public transport in the city. Officials launched the initiative in February with 29 air-conditioned diesel buses. A pilot phase started with 15 buses on the IIM Shillong to Upper Shillong route.
The network expanded to the ISBT Shillong to Lad Smit route. Meghalaya Urban Development Authority Chairman and Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare flagged off the second phase on July 3. Urban Affairs Department Secretary WAM Booth Shadap and Director P.K. Boro also attended. The buses feature CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, and electronic ticketing.
Efficiency is the primary draw for riders. The buses avoid long waits at junctions to fill seats. "The best thing about this bus is that it doesn’t stop at junctions for five or ten minutes waiting for passengers. It only stops to pick up and drop commuters, making the journey much faster," one passenger noted. Conductors use portable machines for ticketing, replacing manual methods.
Designated bus bays help clear road congestion. Daily ridership now exceeds 5,000 people. A new mobile app tracks locations, and online booking will arrive soon. Despite the success, some riders noted maintenance issues. Some vehicles need cleaning, and minor safety gear like emergency hammers requires replacement. Commuters also suggested uniforms for staff to improve identification. Residents now hope for consistent upkeep to prevent the fate of previous failed transport projects.
