Shillong Marks Independence Day With Rallies and Exhibits

Shillong: Shillong kicks off Independence Day on Saturday with a packed schedule of public events. The city transforms into a hub of activity. The Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong teams up with Singla Associates for The Independence Convoy 2026. This Royal Enfield motorcycle rally, themed Ride with Pride. Ride for India, promotes road safety and civic duty.

The General Officer Commanding, 101 Area, will serve as chief guest and flag off the riders. Participants gather at 8 am at the State Central Library. The flag-off happens at 8:45 am, with the convoy returning to the library. The event aims to foster camaraderie among the city's riding community.

Later in the day, activists gather at Police Bazar at 3 pm for a national signature campaign. Titled Protect Religious Freedom for Christians in India, the drive focuses on human dignity, constitutional values, and proposed FCRA changes. Organizers intend to provide a democratic platform for public input. They also use the gathering to push for peace in Manipur. The group issued a statement noting the campaign acts as an appeal for continued efforts to "restore peace, dignity and harmony among communities."

Weather enthusiasts get their turn at 10 am. The India Meteorological Department hosts an open house at the Meteorological Centre, Shillong. Centered on the theme 150 Years of Vande Mataram – Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047, the exhibit showcases forecasting tech.
