Aizawl: Security forces hammered smugglers across Mizoram this week. Between July 24 and July 26, joint teams seized narcotics and areca nuts worth Rs 14.2 crore. They arrested seven people in total, including two Myanmar nationals. The Assam Rifles led the charge, working alongside the Mizoram Police, Excise and Narcotics Department, Customs Preventive Force, and various intelligence agencies.
The biggest bust hit Sairang on July 24. Officers recovered 2.18 kg of methamphetamine tablets. The stash holds a street value of Rs 6.57 crore. These pills are known locally as the "crazy drug". Four people face charges. Police also impounded two vehicles and four mobile phones.
Saitual district saw action on July 25. Near the Manipur border, troops found 67 grams of heroin hidden inside six soap cases. That haul is worth Rs 50.25 lakh. One suspect is in custody, and another phone is off the streets. That same day, authorities stopped a massive shipment of areca nuts on the Champhai-Khawzawl road. They recovered 501 bags weighing 40,080 kg, valued at Rs 4.12 crore.
The final strike occurred on July 26 in Siasi village. Near the Myanmar border, agents seized 401 grams of heroin worth nearly Rs 3 crore. Two Myanmar nationals were arrested here. Officers collected two more mobile phones. All suspects and evidence have moved to local police stations or customs authorities for legal action. In all, the four operations yielded 2.18 kg of meth, 468 grams of heroin, and over 40 tonnes of smuggled areca nuts.
